Ask a question you know is yes, such as "Is my name…?" with your own name, and watch how the point moves. That is your yes.

Ask a question you know is no and notice that motion. A pendulum may circle, swing back and forth, side to side or on a diagonal; each one has its own way.
Clear it in water, light or smoke.
Many people cleanse a pendulum before first use and now and then afterward: a brief rinse under cold running water, a rest in sunlight or moonlight, or a pass through sage or palo santo smoke.
