Born in a volcanic blast.
Obsidian is volcanic glass formed by volcanic explosions. The molten lava carries the same minerals as granite, but it cools so quickly after the eruption that the minerals have no time to crystallize, leaving no internal crystalline structure. It is smooth as glass because it is a type of glass. Most people picture it black, yet obsidian forms in dozens of colors and variations.
The Aztecs and Mayans are said to have prized obsidian for ritual pieces, decorations and mirrors, and some believe the Aztecs gazed into obsidian mirrors to divine the future. In Aztec mythology, obsidian was a gift from the deity Quetzalcoatl, a symbol of protection and transformation.
Obsidian is found in Mexico, the United States, Armenia, Turkey, Iceland and Japan.
